The Mark of True Humility

This is Part Four of last week’s Tuesday Night Bible Study, and we will be discovering even more about the character trait of John that led him to be used so mightily by our Lord.  And that trait is humility.  And again, our study is on the testimony of John the Baptist, as found in John 1:19-23.

Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”  He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”  And they asked him, “What then?   Are you Elijah?”  He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?”  And he answered, “No.”  Then they said to him, “Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us?  What do you say about yourself?”  He said: “I am ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Make straight the way of the LORD,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” (John 1:19-23).

The Scriptures have much to say about humility.  In fact, James quotes Proverbs 3:34 when he says, “But He (God) gives more grace.  Therefore He (God) says, ‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble'” (James 4:6).  Humility seems to be one of the virtues we have forsaken in our narcissistic culture and one that needs to be rediscovered by His church.

I pray you will be blessed on this first day of a new week, and a new month, as we strive together to become more like Him.
